Yes, it is great fun to run lvl 5 in a carrier, even and "particularly" if you get jumpped by wannabe pirates or griefers.
Get two carriers and fit them out exactly the same and have them at the station where the lvl5 agent is (this is along the lines of: don't fly what you can't affort do lose; and when you do lose it, it will hurt you less psychologically knowing you have a reserve ship that is good to go). Have full insurance on your main ship, and leave the reserve ship uninsured.
Your carrier should have two heavy energy neutralizers fitted (the faction type for range), and these should always have "overheat" turned on (no damage will be incurred by the modules until you activate them, but once you do you want to get the most out of them immediately). These are used to neut any incoming tacklers, so you can make your way out and warp back to station.
If this doesn't work, you have two alternative options:
- Activate your triage module, put your two reppers on overheat, and self-destruct. It is very diffult to destroy a Carrier with 1.4M EHP, that repairs itself for 18K DPS in less than two mintutes. This is a valid tactic that was used by the Russians to defeat Napoleon. You will lose the ship, but you win the battle, and they won't get that Killmail to attach to their small epeens. This is the hero option.
- Alternatively, you can activate your triage module, put the two reppers on overheat, and log-off. This is the coward option, but you may save your ship.
In both cases, there is still a chance they destroy your carrier, in which case they deserve it. However, for this to happen they will need at least 20 BS + several tacklers, or bring a small cap fleet.
As for best ship and fitting, use a thanatos, it tanks 18,328 DPS for 3 minutes, has uniform resist between 75.5% and 76.9%, 1.4M EHP (1.9M with Slave + Akemon), and 1500 DPS:
